How to Properly Care for Your Solid Wood Furniture in Calgary

When you purchase solid wood furniture, such as the gorgeous Aydin bedroom furniture, it’s important to know how to treat the pieces well.  When properly cared for, great furniture and Ashley Furniture in Calgary can last for decades, or even become heirloom items passed on to future generations.

Solid wood furniture does require more upkeep than other types of furniture, so let’s talk a bit about some of the most important aspects of care.

Four Must-Dos When Caring for Solid Wood Furniture

  • Keep the wood properly finished

When you purchase your furniture, it will come with a finish already applied. Make sure to ask what type of finish was used, and how long it’s expected to last.  A good finishing will last for years, but you will want to periodically have it re-finished so that it can continue to look beautiful for years to come.

  • Don’t place hot and cold items directly on the wood

Wood will be more sensitive to temperature than many other materials.  It will be particularly weak to heat, which can quickly remove the finish and damage the underlying wood.  Never place anything on a wood surface that is hotter than 140°F (60°C) without padding beneath.  Be careful with cold objects as well, such as cold drinks.  Cold by itself shouldn’t damage the wood, but the condensation that forms could be very damaging.  Always use coasters or similar protection.

  • Maintain a favorable indoor atmosphere

Wood’s vulnerability to heat, cold, and moisture will also have an impact on your air conditioning.  It’s best to keep a room with wood furniture between 60°F to 80°F (15.5°C to 26.6°C) to reduce long-term damage.  Also, monitor your indoor humidity.  Humidity between 30%-45% is optimal.  High humidity will be much more damaging than low humidity, however, so you might consider installing a dehumidifier in rooms with a lot of wood.

  • Clean and polish often

Wood furniture needs to be cleaned regularly – at least once a month.  This prevents a buildup of dirt and debris that could otherwise dig into the finish and damage the wood itself.  Polishing likewise keeps contaminants off the wood, while also helping it look great!
